      Atomic power devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki, bringing the peace that ended World War II. Brain power developed the microchip and the birth control pill, it created the cloned sheep and the test-tube baby, it realized the age-old dream of flying to the moon. Muscle power set Babe Ruth's home-run record, then broke it.

      These events and accomplishments may seem to have little in common with each other -- or with the Holocaust, the creation of the interstate highway system and the dismantling of official racial segregation in the United States.

      Where they meet is on a list of the 20th century's top 100 news events, as ranked by a group of prominent U.S. journalists and scholars for the Newseum, a museum of news based in Arlington, Va.

      Here's what they picked:
