Ford orders health officials to explain how bad this could get

If he should know how bad things could get then you should as well, says Ontario Premier Doug Ford.

Ford said Thursday that he has told the province’s health officials to brief the public on what could happen when it comes to the coronavirus.

“You deserve to see the same data that I see when I’m making decisions. You deserve to know what I know when you’re making decisions for yourself, your family, and your community,” Ford said.

“And that is why I’ve asked our medical experts to provide a full briefing to the public on where this could go.”

The premier admitted that a full range of options will be laid out. That could include what will happen if we do nothing to stop the virus, if we follow the advice of health officials fully and if we only partially obey their directives.

“I want everyone to know one where Ontario was, where we’re at now, and where we could be if we don’t take further steps. It is going to be a real sobering discussion,” Ford said.

The premier said the information that will be made public will be stark and difficult for many to hear. He made the comments while also announcing that the province will invest $12 million to help online and telephone mental health initiatives such as Kids Help Phone and Bouceback.

Ford said that the province didn’t release the data earlier because it wasn’t ready or complete while so many snow birds and March Break travellers were returning home. He said the province’s top doctor asked for some extra time.

“They wanted a week from the time people were coming back. Now he has proper measurements,” Ford said.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had again rebuffed calls to release the modelling the federal government is relying on during the pandemic.

“I think people can imagine a range of scenarios that shows everything from everyone gets suddenly better within the next few weeks, to this situation just keeps getting worse,” Trudeau said.

Ford said he wasn’t breaking ranks with Trudeau, just trying to be honest with the people of the province.

“No beating around the bush, no holding back figures. I want to be right up front,” Ford said.
